ACUPUNCTURE

A time-tested medicine for modern life.
At Source Healing, acupuncture is not simply about symptom relief. It is a way of listening to the body, understanding its patterns, and helping it return to balance.

Acupuncture is one of the oldest continuously practiced systems of medicine in the world. Using very fine, sterile needles placed at specific points on the body, it helps regulate the nervous system, support circulation, move stagnation, reduce inflammation, and restore communication between the body’s systems.
Acupuncture can be a powerful part of care for many concerns, including:
-
Stress and nervous system dysregulation
-
Pain and tension
-
Headaches and migraines
-
Fertility, pregnancy, and postpartum support
-
Menstrual and hormonal concerns
-
Peri-menopause and menopause
-
Digestive issues
-
Sleep concerns
-
Immune support
-
Recovery from illness or depletion
-
Emotional overwhelm, grief, and major life transitions
More than symptom management

At Source Healing, we practice acupuncture in a way that honors both the immediate concern and the deeper pattern underneath it. That means treatment is not one-size-fits-all. Two people may come in with the same diagnosis and receive completely different treatments based on what their body is showing us.
We look at the whole picture—your symptoms, your stress load, your constitution, your history, and how everything is interacting. This is where acupuncture becomes deeply personal, and often, deeply effective.
What treatment feels like
Many patients are surprised by how calming acupuncture can be. Treatments often create a feeling of exhale in the body—a settling of the nervous system, a softening of tension, and a sense that something has started to move. Some people feel relaxed. Some feel clearer. Some feel energized.
Often, the body begins responding in subtle but meaningful ways over time: sleep improves, pain decreases, cycles regulate, digestion steadies, and resilience begins to return.
Healing is rarely about one dramatic moment. More often, it is the result of helping the body make consistent, supported shifts.

Our approach at Source Healing
What makes Source Healing different is that your care is collaborative. No matter what you are coming in for, we also pay attention to calming the nervous system. Acupuncture sessions may stand on its own or be integrated with herbal medicine, cupping, guasha, electracupuncture, tui na, moxibustion, Qi gong, or other Eastern medicine disciplines.
Additional modalities and therapies that may be included in your customized acupuncture session, based on individual need and time allowance:

CUPPING
Cupping is the use of suctioned cups to bring tension and toxins to the surface of the skin from deeper layers. Great for muscle pain, asthma, colds, and more. If your body is stagnant, it will leave distinct reddish-purple marks on the area upon which it is administered for 3 days up to a week.
*Available to book a-la-carte.

GUA SHA
Gua sha is a gentle scraping of the skin's surface (without breaking the skin) to target muscle tissue where the flow of oxygen and nutrients has been impeded by tension and blockage. Great for back, neck, and shoulder pain. It is also used to strengthen the immune system at the onset of colds.

MOXABUSTION
This technique incorporates the burning of a Chinese herb called Mugwort (Artemesia Vulgaris) over acupuncture points in the body. It opens up acupuncture channels on the body and promotes energy flow where this is stagnation, coldness, or deficiency. This is also commonly used for safe, effective breech baby turns.

TUI NA
Tui Na is simply acupressure, which is the use of hands and fingers on the acupuncture points on the body instead of needles. This is different from massage because the focus is to use acupuncture points and channels to address the patient's root diagnosis. The goal of Tui Na is to release blocked energy and improve flow.

E-STIM ACUPUNCTURE
Electroacupuncture stimulates the points linked to your symptoms to enhance the flow of Qi. Two needles are placed around the point while a machine delivers an electrical impulse to them to help increase the healing effects of standard acupuncture.

HERBAL MEDICINE
Herbal medicine is a time-tested medicine that works beautifully with acupuncture. While acupuncture helps shift and regulate the body during treatment, personalized herbal medicine offers ongoing support between visits, helping to reinforce healing day by day. If you are in active acupuncture care, custom herbal medicine may be recommended as part of the service to support you in between visits.

What else can acupuncture do?
At Source Healing, we also offer Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture as a holistic approach to beauty and vitality rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Rather than chasing surface-level results alone, we look at the deeper internal patterns that shape how we age, hold stress, and express imbalance in the face. The result is a treatment that supports both outer radiance and inner wellness.
FAQ
What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is an ancient medical practice dating back over two millennia that works to correct imbalances in "qi," the vital energy essential for good health. By inserting fine, disposable needles into specific points on the body, acupuncture facilitates the flow of qi. Disruptions in this flow can lead to disease and disharmony, with symptoms like headaches, digestive issues, or insomnia signaling underlying imbalances. At Source Healing, acupuncture is a way to communicate with the body, promote healing, and restore balance.
How is acupuncture different at Source Healing?
At Source Healing, we offer a holistic approach that blends acupuncture with emotional, spiritual, and mindset-based healing. Our practitioners customize treatments to address the root causes of your symptoms, providing a full-service experience that includes adjunct therapies such as cupping, gua sha, or moxibustion when appropriate. Each session is highly personalized, incorporating intuitive energy work and education about this powerful healing art.
What conditions do you treat with acupuncture at Source Healing?
Acupuncture is used to relieve pain and treat a variety of physical, mental, and emotional conditions. Research shows it can calm pain-related areas of the brain, stimulate the nervous system for rest and recovery, increase blood flow, and reduce inflammation. At Source Healing, we specialize in:
-
Fertility
-
Stress
-
Pain management
-
Women's health
-
Internal wellness (e.g. digestive health, chronic conditions, etc.)

However, this is not an extensive list of all that acupuncture can treat and support. If you’re unsure whether acupuncture can address your condition, feel free to contact us.
What can I expect during an acupuncture treatment?
Your first session includes a thorough evaluation and intake. We’ll review your health history and assess the root causes of any imbalances. Your acupuncturist will choose specific acupuncture points tailored to your needs, incorporating techniques like guided meditation, breathwork, and, if appropriate, adjunct therapies such as cupping or gua sha. Each subsequent session will include progress assessments and adjustments to ensure the best results.
How does acupuncture feel? Will it be painful?
Every individual experiences acupuncture differently, but most describe it as a tiny pinch or mild tingling, followed by sensations of heaviness, warmth, or relaxation. For the majority, acupuncture is not painful and can even be calming. If you experience significant discomfort, let your acupuncturist know so adjustments can be made. If you are anxious about needles as many people are, have no worries. We know how to work with you.
How will I feel after my treatment?
Most patients leave feeling calm, relaxed, and more self-aware. Some may experience emotional release, as part of the therapeutic process. Physical side effects, like light bruising, soreness, or muscle twitching, are rare. If this is your first treatment, we recommend allowing time to relax afterward before resuming a busy schedule.
How many treatments will I need?
Healing is unique to each individual. Your acupuncturist will recommend a treatment plan based on your needs and goals. It is also based on how chronic or acute your condition is. In traditional Chinese medicine, frequent sessions (e.g., twice a week for 4 weeks) yield the best results as acupuncture’s effects are cumulative.
What kind of needles are used?
We use sterile, pre-packaged, disposable needles that are thinner than a strand of hair. Needles are used once and disposed of immediately, ensuring safety and hygiene.
What are the credentials of Source Healing acupuncturists?
Our acupuncturists are licensed by the State of Illinois and nationally board-certified by the NCCAOM for acupuncture and herbal medicine. Each practitioner holds a Master’s or Doctoral Degree in Oriental Medicine, completing over 3,000 hours of coursework and nearly 2,000 hours of clinical training. In addition, our team is trained in Western sciences and various forms of energy work, ensuring individualized and inspired treatments. Beyond qualifications, we are passionate about this healing art, providing care that we’d want to receive ourselves.
What is the difference between acupuncture and dry needling?
Acupuncture integrates the wisdom of Traditional Chinese Medicine, requiring over 3,000 hours of training in its theories and systems. Dry needling, used by physical therapists, focuses solely on muscle physiology and not the holistic approach of acupuncture. At Source Healing, we specialize in acupuncture and do not offer dry needling.
What’s the difference between the 80min and 50min initial acupuncture appointments?
The 80min session is required for all new clients or for anyone presenting a new or complex health concern. It includes a comprehensive intake and treatment.
The 50min session is for returning clients or those continuing care for a known issue and includes a shorter intake.
Can I use insurance for my appointment?
